2004-2007

In the work titled 2004 – 2007 I make visible the fear of maternal omnipotence and visualise the phallic mother’s gaze.

It is an exploration of the fear of the possibility of abuse in relation to the complete dependance and vulnerability of the child.  It is also a comment on the mistrust of maternal omnipotence contrasted with the psychoanalytic centrality of the mother’s burden of having the main responsibility for the child’s mental and emotional success as adult.

Having this enormous responsibility and the incessant institutional instructions and guidance as to what to do and what not to do causes the mother to mistrust herself and imagine harming her child.

It is dark and foreboding, making use of spaces in which abuse occurs, the bathroom and the bedroom.  Intimate domestic places turning into sights of potential nightmares.
